Now that you have gone through the whole guide, you should be more than ready to face the challenging job market. At this stage, you should have already discovered the capabilities and advantage that you have over other candidates. What you have learnt in this 48-page book will transform you into a better candidate so as to have a better chance in securing your dream job.

What is next?

While reading the book itself will give you better knowledge on how to win your dream jobs, it is advisable for you to take the following actions to secure your chances completely.

 Read the book from first to last page at least once (twice is the best)
 Re-write your CV as per my recommendations in Chapter 2
 List down list of companies that you want to write-in, read about the companies and prepare cover letters for each of the companies according to the guide in Chapter 2
 Always use the interview and post-interview guide that I shared with you
 Remember the things to consider during negotiation shared in Chapter 4 when you are about to sign the agreement with your new employer.

If you still need help in areas related to any of the chapter, I will be happy to offer additional personalize help through private consultation sessions at a minimal charge. Please refer to the consultation service offers in the next section of this website.

Dubbed as the final stage, the post-interview period is very crucial and a great strategy in capturing this stage will ensure your chance in getting the job. It is one of the less-stressful stages but it is often left out by many Malaysian candidates. Therefore, it is a good opportunity for you to shine at this very important stage. Read through the whole chapter 4 and you will have a great strategy in your hand. Make sure you have done the following:

	Step 1: Carry the momentum: Follow up!
o After each interview session, always send a “Thank You” note
o “Thank You” note should be out within 1-2 days after interview session
o After a short-while, give the HR coordinator or interviewers a call/e-mail to check on your status and reinforce your interest.
o Do not wait and rely on only one job opportunity. Be active and look for other opportunities at other companies simultaneously.
o Once the momentum is up, keep it up and you will be one high-spirit candidate wherever you go

	Step 2: Signing the deal!
o When you finally being offered the job, never accept the job straightaway. Ask opinions from your family, friends and industry experts about the offer and gauge it against the industry standards
o Read through your offer letter for few times and focus on the fine details
o As much as you are excited to be offered the job, always figure out how easy can you leave the company if things does not work out as planned
o After going through all these details, sign the offer letter and be really proud of your success!

	Step 3: What if I did not get the job?
o You can be 110% prepared and follow every step suggested in this book but still you could not the job you applied for.
o Do not let failure kill your motivation
o Each time you fail, you are a much better candidate for the next opportunity
o Learn from each cover letter that you have sent, each interview that you attended and you will be a wiser candidate
o The most important thing is never ever give up your hope!

After rounds of interviews, evaluations, hoping and praying, you will eventually be offered the job that you applied for. This would be the last step of your long and challenging job hunting process. The moment that you receive a call from your potential employer, be prepared to discuss terms for your new employment. In some cases, the company will also discuss with you on your expectations towards the job salary and compensation package during the final interview. This sub-section will cover briefly the task of negotiating and securing the best offer from the company.

	Setting Your Salary Expectations
For you to negotiate the best employment deal with your future employer, you have to revisit your CV once again. Remember in Chapter 2 you have prepared a comprehensive CV that includes a figure of your expected salary which is an approximate value of your educational background and experiences. Whenever being interviewed and asked about your expected salary, do use the same figure as the one you stated in your CV. This figure will be used as the first bargaining chip with your future employer.

When the time comes for negotiating your salary, always listen to the offer being made before you ask for a higher amount. The employer will have rationales behind the offer being made. In most cases, employer will refer to your past salary and the industry rate in offering you the salary for the job. Before asking for a higher amount, ask yourself whether you really deserve to earn more that what is being offered. You do not want to be underpaid and you also do not want to start on the wrong side with your new employer by asking something that you do not deserve.

Often the salary being offered is only one part of the compensation package. You also need to look into other benefits listed in your job contract.

	Allowances, Incentives and Bonus
On top of your basic salary, companies may also offer allowances, incentives and bonus depending on the company policies and nature of the job.

For allowances, certain companies provide basic allowances such as allowances for office parking, phone, car, housing and travel. While it is not compulsory to provide allowances, it has become a more common approach for companies to use allowance to assist its employees in facing the high-cost of living. Allowances help companies to maintain paying lower basic salary while retaining its employees. Take note that in some cases whenever you earn monthly allowance, you may not be eligible to claim for your business purpose activities such as business travel. For example, a company might give its employee RM100 for phone allowance. If during the month, the employee uses the phone for business purposes for as much as RM150, the employee still receive RM100 and not eligible to claim the remainder RM50. Do check with the company on policies behind the compensation package as well as the policy for business purposes claims.

As for incentives, certain jobs especially sales related positions will offer a lower basic salary but complements it with an incentive system. Incentives are usually in monetary form and the employee will receive the incentives every time the sales target is achieved. While it is a risk to yourself, it is also a good way to make use of your capabilities to earn as much as possible as the system indicates that the more sales that you close in every month, the higher amount of incentives that you can bring home. During interviews, do ask the employer on the average rate of incentives payout each month and the level of sales targets that have been set in the past.

As for bonus, there are two types of yearly bonuses. First being contractual which is stated in your job offer that the company will pay a certain amount of bonus regardless of your performance and the company’s performance. Contractual bonus is less risky but often the amount is not as impressive as performance-based bonus.

Performance-based bonus is a type of system where the payout of bonuses depends on the discretion of the company. Often companies pay bonuses depending on the performance of the company and the employee. The advantage of this system is the bonus payout can be very high if the company is achieving high profitability but it is also risky as companies have the right not to give any bonuses if the company is not performing well. Either way, if a company is offering bonus whether it’s contractual or performance-based, you can already be grateful as bonus is not mandatory and there are companies that do not practice paying bonuses at all.

	Non-Monetary Benefits
While your salary helps to pay bills and provide food on your table, there are other benefits of non-monetary forms that you need to carefully evaluate in your employment contract. Benefits such as free company car-park, free company products, staff purchase and company trips will provide additionally to the basic salary that in the end is almost equivalent to earning a higher amount of salary.

	Medical Benefits
One form of benefit often overlooked by many Malaysians is medical benefits. When you are being offered a job, always double check the medical coverage benefits offered by the company. It should at least be a basic coverage covering yourself and your immediate family. Although you are a bachelor, always think ahead and check whether the coverage covers your future wife and children. Also verify the type of coverage whether it is a third party insurance or the company will simply pay for any medical bills as per claimed. For 3rd party insurance coverage, you can check the service provider’s website for its level of coverage for you to better understand the benefits. For medical coverage using pay-per-claimed policy, understand the company’s panel of clinics and limit for every bill. Also find out whether medical coverage includes optical and dentist as well.

	Annual and Medical Leave
Identify the amount of annual leaves that you will be entitled during your employment. In average a private-sector company will give you the benefit of 14 days annual (paid) leave. It is a benefit as you are being paid while taking leave. Check with your employer on the policy of taking leaves and whether you are allowed to take leave during probation period. Same applies for medical leave, check with your employer how many days of medical leaves that you are entitled to and whether you need to have the medical-certificate (MC) from a specific clinic.

	Confirmation and Resignation
It is equally important to be clear on your employment contract in terms of confirmation and resignation. Confirmation is crucial as it is the real starting point of your long journey in the corporate ladder of the company you are joining. It is the point where you need to be answerable to the tasks and responsibilities being put on your shoulder. Check with the employer on when you will be confirmed and whether there will be any salary revision after the probation period. By knowing up-front, you will have better knowledge in your salary expectation after confirmation.

As for resignation, it is a job benefit as a good job will allow you to leave the company in a very professional and smooth manner. You need to carefully look at the notice period required for resignation. This is always stated in the employment contract. As a rule of thumb, re-negotiate jobs that require you to put in a notice period more than 3 months in advance. An ideal period would be 1-month which will offer you enough time to handover your work and the company enough time to find a replacement.

After carefully identifying the above points and making sure the offer is right for you, you may finally accept the job offer. Sometimes negotiations can take a few days as companies need to discuss and decide on your requests internally. If you are confident that you have done well after the final round of interview and during negotiations, you should be prepared to receive the ‘Good News Call’ from the company.

Now that the toughest part of the first interview is over, it is important to sustain the momentum and continue to follow up until you get some news. Usually you will either get a call-back for a second interview or in some cases you will be immediately offered the job or not receiving any call at all. Due to the high number of candidates, many companies are now simply not calling unsuccessful candidates anymore. The “Don’t call us; we’ll call you” principle still applies with a little twist of “If we don’t call you, that means you’re unsuccessful!” So how long do you need to wait before calling the company? How persistent you should be in following up? All these will be covered in this chapter along with of course killer tips that will make you a better candidate.

After Interview Follow Up

So you had a great interview session. It really made your day and you are extremely happy to see the delighted faces on the interviewers. You are confident you are getting the job and just need to wait for the call from the interviewer. Days go by and still no calls. Weeks have passed and you start to wonder, was I as good as I thought I was in that interview? Why aren’t they calling me again?

The scenario above may have happened to you before. It is indeed frustrating yet it is a fact of life as a job seeker. One of the biggest factors that contribute to you not getting a job despite an impressive interview is being drown or lost amongst hundreds of short listed and interviewed candidates. Hence, it is very important to make yourself visible to the company even after the interview has ended.

Following-up is one of the most relevant and important steps in securing your job. The ground rule is unless specified otherwise; you always need to have a follow-up strategy. The most basic way of following-up and a must to everyone following my strategy is to send a simple thank you note in a form of e-mail or letter. This is something very common in modern countries but not being practiced in Malaysia…yet! So use this as an advantage and start drafting simple thank you notes for the interviewers.

	Thank You Note
Writing a thank you note is a very easy task. First of all you will need to decide on whether to send the note via e-mail or a letter. My recommendation would be during your interview to ask for one of the interviewer’s contacts or at least the contact email of the HR coordinator that called you to arrange for the interview. Once you get one of the e-mail addresses, you can prepare the thank you note and address it to everyone in the panel including the HR coordinator. It is ok to have only one note for everyone and pass the note to one person but have the note addressed to the entire panel.

If you could not get any of the email address, at least get the full name of the HR coordinator. The thank you note can be prepared, printed out and send it by hand to the receptionist addressing to the entire panel via the HR coordinator. This would at least show your level of seriousness and commitment in getting the job.

There are thousands of samples on the Internet that you can use as a guideline for a thank you note or simply write it yourself from scratch. Keep it simple and straight forward, referring to the date and time of your interview and mentioned that you are honored to be short listed for the interview and appreciate the opportunity to meet-up for a very positive interview session. Also mention that if there is a need for a follow-up interview or more questions to be asked, do not hesitate to contact you at your mobile number. Close the note with a thank you statement and look forward for the feedback from the company. It is a surprisingly simple task yet many seem to disregard it. It is indeed one of the best-kept secrets of job hunting in Malaysia.

Once the thank you note is ready, you can send it off immediately. A good timing would be within 1-2 days after the interview. Do not wait till too late as the momentum of the interview will be gone and the interviewers would have interviewed many other candidates by that time.

One thing about thank you note that you need to know is that companies will not necessarily reply to your note. It is an extra edge that you will have against other candidates and it will give you a slight or substantial advantage.

	Follow-up Call/E-mail
Sending a thank you note is a quick and simple task. However what if the company never gets back to you on the result of the interview. This is a bit tricky as some companies do not appreciate candidates calling them to ask about the interview. Rule of thumb is never call more than once. Allow some time for the company to get back to you. If the interviewers tell you that results will be out in two weeks, give the company three weeks before calling them. Be polite when you call and make reference to the position you were interviewed for. Another tip is to call the HR coordinator instead of the interviewers as he or she should be aware of your status as well.

While most interviews are done face to face, there can be variances to the modes of interview depending on the organization. The existence of new technology such as e-mail and mobile phones has allowed interviews and selection of candidates to be done from any part of the world. Below are some other modes of interviews that you need to be aware of and ways to ‘win’ these kinds of interviews.

	Phone Interview
Phone interview has always been the solution for companies that have shortlisted many candidates and need to further shortlist the candidates without asking everyone to come to the office. Many candidates claim phone interview is an unfair way of judging a candidate as they are caught unaware but yet it has become a normal method for many companies. The only way to be ready for phone interview is to be prepared as soon as you apply for the job. Many think that preparation for an interview should be a day before the interview session. This is no longer valid as phone interview can happen as quickly as the same day you send in your job application.

Usually the phone interviewer will call many candidates for phone interview. You can be one of hundreds that that they call so be ready and be different. If you follow the guide in this book carefully, you should already know about the job and the company, therefore phone interviews should not be a problem anytime. However in a scenario that you are not prepared to answer the questions or are feeling nervous, or suddenly forgetting all the facts about the company, there is always the classic trick of asking the interviewer to call back.

Of course, it is not the best approach to ask interviewer to call back but this is a matter of getting the job or not so if it needs to be done, it must be done. Some of the safest reasons you can give are “I am driving, can you call me back in 15 minutes”, “I am in a meeting”, “I am with my client” and many more. However as a courtesy, always limit yourself not to ask them to call back more than an hour. By asking them to call back within 20-30 minutes will give you ample time to prepare for the interview.

Once you are ready for the interview, a phone interview session should be a simple task. Simply imagine that you are in a face-to-face interview and use the guideline explained in the previous section. The only difference would be instead of using facial and body gestures, concentrate on solely your voice tones to emphasize your strength and seriousness of the points you are talking about. Also, try to reduce the usage of lahs, mahs and errrs. It is ok and understandable to use it sparsely as some of us are so used to Manglish but please try to minimize it.

	Written Test
Often before an interview session is conducted, a candidate especially for an entry-level position will be asked to go through a short written test. This can be in the form of short essay, multiple choice questions, IQ/personality test and general knowledge test. Always arrive for an interview 15 minutes earlier for you to settle down, fill up the application form and complete any written tests required.

A written test is a way for the company to pre-asses you to determine your compatibility to the company and the job. Fill up the tests with honest answers and do not try to be someone you are not as it will surely backfire during the interview session. The two most common tests would be IQ/personality test and essay test. An IQ/personality test is simply to understand your true personality as during interview, candidates tend to be someone else. There are quite a number of format of an IQ/personality tests but it is usually in the format of series of related questions with multiple choices. The tip to ‘win’ this kind of test is to be who you really are and maintain a similar pattern of answers. For example in a series of interest questions, if you are an active and outdoor person, always maintain the pattern and do not contradict your next answers saying that you hate being outdoor. In the case that during the real interview, the interviewer might query you by saying “if you love outdoors, this job is an office job, how can I offer you this job?” You may convince the interviewer by simply saying that the IQ/personality questions are subjective and subject to different interpretation. You can also explain that “you love outdoors but you do not have problem working indoors as you have been doing it for years in your current job”. Always have fun with these IQ/Personality tests and take it easy as you will have a chance to explain your answers during the real interview.

As for essay tests, the main objective is to gauge your level of communication in writing primarily in English. Most of the times, the company will give a topic that can be a general topic or a topic related to the company or field for the candidate to write a short essay. It is very simple and should not require a lot of effort. Simply prepare the outline and the points before you write. Once you start to write, just let your idea and creative writing do its work. Do use a level of English that you are comfortable with and always double check your grammar and spelling before submitting. If your written English is not that good, do not worry. Use basic English and practice a few times writing a simple essay on various topics before going for the interview. After all, practice makes perfect!

	E-mail Interview / Online Test
Although not as common as phone interviews, e-mail interview or online survey is fast becoming a method for fast screening of mass candidates especially in large multi-national corporations (MNC) companies. Before you are even considered for a real interview, some companies will ask you to do online tests to determine your capability and personality. This will save the company’s time in calling all the candidates in. Although it seems to be very unfair to judge a candidate through email, the method is still being used nowadays.

An easy tip for answering e-mail interviews is to take your time and study the questions, the company, the business and the people to get your answers. Spend 1-2 hours gathering the information before replying the email. For online surveys and IQ tests, do refer to the previous section.

	Walk-In Interview
Another mode of interview that is the ever famous walk-in interview. It is still being used by many MNCs, banks, call-centre companies and even airlines for cabin crew recruitment. Walk-in interviews are usually held in hotels and convention centers. In terms of preparation (understanding the company, wardrobe, CVs), it will be similar to normal interviews. You should prepare in advance for the challenging walk-in interview by really understanding the job and the company.

A good tip for walk-in interviews is to come as early as possible to the venue as most likely it would be on a first-come-first-serve basis. There will be long queues if you arrive late and it will weaken your spirit since you have to wait and mingle with other candidates. By arriving early, not only you have a shorter waiting time, you will also show your commitment towards getting the job and this creates a good first impression to your potential employer. You might ask “will being the first few candidate make me lost amongst thousand other walk-in candidates?” The answer is yes; you will be temporarily lost and forgotten. However if you have made a good impact during the interview and you make sure that you follow-up (following-up to be discussed in the next chapter) after the interview, you will not be forgotten when they make the selection.

In terms of duration, walk-in interviews can be slightly faster as there are more candidates. Therefore, do answer your questions using the I.C.A method described in the previous chapter. Other than that, walk-in interviews should not be any different from other job interview.

After you have been asked a long list of questions, you will have the opportunity to ask questions to the interviewer. This is a normal procedure and most of the time it will happen at the end of the interview. No matter how clear are you about the company and the job, always have at least one question to ask. Simply not asking any question gives an impression that you are not interested in the job or not well prepared. Below are some guidelines in asking questions to the interviewers:

	The most common questions to ask
Before attending an interview, take note of the general questions being used by candidates. The frequently asked questions (FAQ) will allow you to be prepared with at least one question. It is highly encouraged to have more comprehensive and unique questions but having an FAQ will at least be a good back-up in case you cannot come out with other questions for whatever reason.

To prepare for a couple of FAQs, all you need to do is to browse the company’s website again. You have visited the company’s information when you applied for the job so it is quite straight forward. Look into the news area at the website and find out what are the latest happenings within the company and the industry. From this information you can prepare at least one question. For example, a construction company might publish news of exploring new business market in the Middle East. You may use this information to ask question like “I’ve discovered your company’s interest towards the market in the Middle East, how does it affect the company’s overall investment in terms of manpower and re-assignment of personnel?” This way you are indirectly asking of any possibilities of being located in the new market.

Asking common questions can not only be about the company but also the interview process itself. Some good common questions regarding this matter are “How long will it take for the whole interview process?”, “How many levels of interview will I have to go through?”, “Do you need any additional testimonials or support documents from my prior employer?”. These are just some of the many good common questions that can bring a nice ending to your interview.

	Preparing the Questions
While FAQ plays the role as your back-up questions, it is encouraged to have questions relating to the interview itself. As mentioned in previous sections, it is important to give full attention to all the questions and facts given out by the interviewers. By listening carefully and taking notes, you can ask questions that reflects not only your interest but your capability and experience.

A good tip is to use the direction of the questions that are being asked. For example, interviewers for an IT Executive job might ask you many questions relating to your technical capability on specific software such as Microsoft Access. During your turn to ask questions, you might want to ask about the software that the company is using and why it is important to emphasize on Microsoft Access compared to other available software. This shows that you are paying attention and wanted to know the rationale behind all the questions being asked to you.
The asking question session is a unique opportunity to clarify any matters that you want to know. Questions should fall on one or many of these categories of about the company, the job, the industry and the interview itself. Curiosity has its rewards so do ask as many good questions as possible.

An important note is not to ask questions that are related to job benefits, salary and compensation on your first interview. Unless being asked by the interviewers, you want to stay away from this topic so that you would not be seen as too materialistic and over-confident. You can however casually ask about how long you will have to wait before being informed of the result for the interview.

	Asking the Questions
When asking questions, try to limit yourself and not to go overboard by asking too many questions, especially those obvious ones that you can easily find the answers on the company’s website or annual report. It is good to have more than one question but do prioritize and ask questions that are the most relevant and would give most impact to your chance of getting the job.

Now that you know what to ask and which questions to ask first, you will have no problem asking your questions. The beauty of asking questions is that when you feel you have enough, you can just simply stop and end the interview. Structure the questions to be clear, precise and short and group your questions accordingly so that it will be in an order of relevance making it easier for the interviewers to answer.

An easy mistake made by many is being too arrogant and overconfident in asking questions. Despite being prepared and equipped with questions, do not give an impression that you know everything about the company or challenge the interviewers on too many details. Note that some details about the company are not meant to be shared with a job candidate and the interview might get offended if you want to know too much and too deep of any information. Always begin your questions with phrases such as “If I may ask… or if it is ok with you…” for questions that can be a bit sensitive to the organization. Just like other things, you will feel comfortable once you have a bit of practice in asking questions so do practice a lot!
